FFAC Kits and Bundled Parts

Automotive technicians are highly skilled but may be limited by the quality of their tools and the parts that they work with.  While knowledge is king, quality of work and speed is also regal.

These assortment kits have an variety of the most popular quick connectors and splicing materials that were developed and are being sold with the Auto repair shop in mind.

Fact Check - Replacement parts bought “when I need them” is cheaper than stocking inventory.  I can get what I need, and only exactly what I need - when I have to.

 Case 1:

Imagine if you will.  A car pulls in, you get it on the lift, you determine it needs a transmission tune-up.  You swap it out with your favorite “go- to” rebuild and flush kit, lines are rusted, so you swap them out also - everything is good.   You complete the transaction and move on to the next vehicle.  Another great day!

Reality - A car pulls in, you get it on the lift, you determine it needs a transmission tune-up.  You swap it out with your favorite “go- to” rebuild on the shelf and flush the lines, lines are rusted, shows signs of a leak and won’t connect so you call in the vin numbers to the dealer.  They don’t have the part.  It is obsoleted.  You type the number on-line and search yes you find a non-OE knockoff.  Two-day shipping, you order parts, and move on to the next job.  You pull the vehicle half done out of the bay, and will finish later.  You tell the customer they will need to leave the car with you for a couple of days.  They are not happy but understand.  Part arrives two days later you pull the vehicle back in and finish the job.  Call customer, once they arrive you complete the transaction.  You see the look on their face – anguish.

Case 2:

Imagine if you will.  A car pulls in, you get it on the lift, you determine it needs a new radiator.  You swap it out with your favorite “go- to” on the shelf and flush the system, cooler lines are rusted, and seeping oil so you repair them also - everything is good.   You complete the transaction and move on to the next vehicle.  Another great day!

Reality - A car pulls in, you get it on the lift, you determine it needs a radiator.  You swap it out with your favorite “go- to” on the shelf and flush the lines, oil cooler lines are rusted, won’t connect so you call in the vin numbers to the dealer.  They have the part, but it will be 4 hours to get it from another store.  You either pull the vehicle half done out of the bay, and will finish later, or since you had some aftermarket hose and clamps.  You splice a “fix” into the existing oil cooler line bypassing the seeping oil.

Conclusion – Waiting to fix a common issue is often not realized as lost time because you are busy, whether on the phone, computer, or running to the store.  The accepted norm is that more time is spent attaining parts than performing work.  You don’t have the vehicle specific parts when you need them.  You can’t stock them all.

Questions to ask:

  •  How far away is a dealership (auto store) and do they have the parts onsite in stock?
  •  Do you wait a couple of days to fix a simple repair because there are no parts available and have to wait for a delivery?
  • How are the knock off parts working out?
  • Genuine OEM replacements at hand ready to repair, that would be nice. Would it be even better if there were an assortment of parts available?
